Found Another One

Well, we did it again. With the wife and mother-in-law out of town, LW and I decided we needed to hit the trail. Originally, I wanted to head to Red Rock Canyon for a cache and then a movie with Grandma, but homework has kept me close to home. :(

There it is!

There it is!

We found the Easter Bunny’s Cache, which is only a couple miles from the house… as the crow flies. Little did I realize that there is a HUGE, fenced, gravel pit between our house and the treasure. The GPS says we hiked over six miles round trip. *hurmph*

Spiders?

I’ve got say, LW is a trooper. He talked my ear off for the entire hike and only asked to ride on my shoulders about 15 minutes from home. Then, by the time I was ready to pick him up, he said, “I changed my mind, Dad. I want to walk some more.” *faint* I’m sooooo proud of him.

Pbbbbbbtttttt!

LW brought Star Wars tattoos to trade, and we came home with a plastic spider and octopus.

It was awesome!

P.S. It is now 3:00 in the afternoon, and we’re hangin’ out in our pajamas for the rest of the day. :)

Hollywood should be worried

A friend and my wife dragged her husband and me to see Slumdog Millionaire on Saturday. I hadn’t seen the preview and the title did not encourage my interest. Although it won several Golden Globes, I just wasn’t interested in seeing this film.

I’m glad I did. This is one of the best films I’ve seen in years. It also reminded me that I haven’t made an effort to see any quality films for several years; I’ve been a sheep to the Hollywood marketing machine. *sigh*

This film should be a wake-up call to the Hollywood executives entrenched in formula for success. Although Slumdog Millionaire has a British director and is filmed mostly in English, if this is the type of film Bollywood is producing, Hollywood should be worried.

Also, I enjoy the traditional dance numbers at the end of Bollywood films. :)

Serious Thinking Going On

Here’s proof that kids think philosophically.

Riding in the car one day, LW brought this little gem to my attention.

“Dad, if the Rancor Monster is a creature that eats other creatures why doesn’t it just eat itself? That would have been easier for Luke.”

I had no words. It’s nice to know my kid is a thinker.

2008 – News in Review

I found this on “On a Limb with Claudia.” It’s about three minutes long and totally worth the time.

January 4th, 2009 – A day that will live in infamy… Well, maybe not, but it is the start of a new hobby for the Williams family.

The Treasure Chest

The Treasure Chest

Like most hobbies in my life, this one started with technology…

I was perusing a list of iphone applications when I came across this geocaching app on sale for a mere $2.99.

This being our last day Winter Break and feeling a need to get away from the myriad of to-dos on our various lists, the wife and I decided to take LW on our first geocaching adventure. Using the cool new application, we found something close to home and headed out.

Using Grandpa Mikes oldish GPS

Using Grandpa Mike's "oldish" GPS

For those not in the know, geocaching has been around for a long time, and for years Dave and I have periodically threatened to search for some. Simply, hikers create treasure boxes and leave them in various places, then they log those treasures, or caches, onto a geocaching website. Other people like me then log into the website, search for caches close to where they wish to hike, log the coordinates into a GPS, and away they go: Indiana Jones in the making.

Most caches have a log book for signing in, and most provide a trading treasure system, where finders are welcome to take a treasure as long as they leave one. Our cache today had several interesting items: several geocaching “business” cards, a Burger King toy from Flushed Away, a sequined ponytail holder, etc. LW traded a Luke Skywalker bobblehead for a glow-in-the-dark rat. It was fun.

Indiana Jones has nothing on us.

Indiana Jones has nothing on us.

After looking through the entry for this cache on the website, I discovered that this site has been found over 150 times prior to us and the last person to visit was only two days ago. Interesting.

LW loved the whole treasure exchange thing, and we really enjoyed the hide-and-seek aspect of this hike, so we’re hoping to search for more caches in the future. We’re already looking for caches we can find while on vacation in Utah. :) .

Big Bang Christmas

If you don’t watch The Big Bang Theory, you should. It is the funniest and smartest comedy on TV.

I laughed so hard during this scene… um, well, let’s just say I laughed really hard and was lucky I didn’t have to change clothes.

The setup:

Sheldon is distressed because Penny has gotten him a gift. He states early in the episode that he needs to find a gift for Penny that is commiserate in monetary value and friendliness, but he doesn’t know what Penny has gotten him. Undeterred, Sheldon prepares for almost any situation, but little does he know…
