silly-shakespeareI will be gone for a seminar to help coordinate our state English/Language Arts Standards with the new federal standards on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 30th and 31st.

On those two days, students will be expected to complete bell work and listen to the lecture below. The substitute will have this lecture on CD, and students must answer questions that match the lecture. I’m posting these materials here for any students who are absent on those days.

ExtraCreditSignDuring the month of December, students may earn 10 bonus points by participating in a community service activity and showing Mr. Williams proof of the participation.

There are several activities on campus:

  1. Student Council is making cards to send to a leukemia victim who wants to set the world record for card collecting.
  2. National Honor Society is collecting 12″ teddy bears for kids in need.
  3. Another club will be sponsoring giving trees in the main and A-buiding offices.
  4. ROTC will probably have a service opportunity.
  5. ??

Also, any community service opportunity will count:

  1. Working as a Salvation Army Bell Ringer.
  2. Donating food to one of the local food banks.
  3. Church related community service.
  4. Activities related the 4H or Scouting.
  5. ??

Bring in proof of you participating in any service activity this month and you will be awarded 10 bonus points. You might bring in pictures of yourself, a note from a parent or organization leader, a receipt for a donated purchase, etc. Use your imagination, and get into the spirit of the season.

Happy Holidays,

-Mr. W.

This extra credit is only good from 12/1/09 to 12/18/09 and will count on 2nd quarter.

Reminder about extra credit: Mr. Williams records all of your extra credit, but none of it becomes part of your grade until the last day of the quarter. For your extra credit to improve your grade, you must first have a passing grade (60%) on the regular work. (Honors students must have at least 70%.)

ExtraCreditSignDuring the month of November, students may earn 10 bonus points by making two unique (as in not in the dictionary & you make them up) words comprised of Greek roots and posting them in a comment below with clever, dictionary-like definitions.

Each word must must contain at least two roots, but three is better.

At the end of the month, classes will vote for the most clever, funny, well-defined, real-sounding word. The student whose word wins will receive an additional 10 points.

To get the extra credit please complete the following steps:

  1. Fill in the comment form that appears after clicking on “comments” below. Then post your words with definitions.
  2. Please “sign” your comments with your first name and class period.
  3. You do not need to print anything out. Mr. Williams will track the comments and put in your extra credit automatically.

The purpose of this exercise is for students to learn how to add comments in a discussion thread. I wonder if we’ll have online discussions in the future?

Also, if you have a suggestion for extra credit for December and I use it, and I’ll give the student who makes the suggestion 10 points. Please email me the suggestion: MrW.PVHS at gmail.com

B+I try to update grades on my website, which will give a listing of individual assignments, every Friday.

Students or parents need to have passwords to access these grades, and the PowerSchool passwords don’t automatically transfer, so please email Mr. W. a request for a password if the site won’t allow access.

Please click here to get to the login page, or click over there —> under RESOURCES, where it says “Grades.”

There has been a bit of confusion. The “Login” button under META doesn’t link to grades. It’s a link to login to edit this website.

Please email me with questions: mrw.pvhs at me dot com. <— I post my email address like this because spammers send out “bot” programs to “sniff” webpages for email address to add to spamming databases. Please use the @ symbol for “at” and the . to replace the word “dot”. :)

Globe Theatre in CakeOur final unit in English 9 revolved around Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. I assigned a project where students had a few choices. One choice was to make a model of the Globe Theatre, where many of Shakespeare’s plays were originally performed. To the right is one of several models created for class. This one was done by Tim Rivers, who aspires to be a chef; he made it out of cake. It was both amazing and delicious.

Another project had students acting out scenes of from the play. Click here to see some of the pictures.

I know it’s the end of June, and very few of my students will read this; but I want to say you all did great jobs on your projects even those that aren’t pictured here.

Thanks.-Mr. W.
